Mossman Gorge

Cairns to Mossman Gorge - Mossman Gorge Australia

Mossman Gorge is situated within the lush rainforests of Daintree and Cape Tribulation national parks, known for their wet tropics climate. This enchanting destination is conveniently located just a quick 20-kilometre drive from Port Douglas, or approximately 77 kilometres north of Cairns, making it easily accessible for visitors.

Mossman Gorge provides visitors with a range of activities to explore its natural beauty. You can enjoy scenic walking tracks, take a refreshing dip in freshwater swimming holes, and even join guided walking tours led by knowledgeable locals who are traditional Aboriginal landowners.

When you arrive at the visitor's centre car park, you can explore the crafts and souvenirs available at the visitor's information centre. Feel free to ask the staff any questions you may have, and if you're hungry, there is a small restaurant where you can grab a snack.

The information centre provides free toilets and showers for visitors. Additionally, you can conveniently purchase a shuttle bus ticket at the information centre, which will transport you from there to the starting point of the Mossman Gorge Walk.

Mossman Gorge Australia

The shuttle service is available for $8.90 AUD per person, with a child ticket priced at $4.45 AUD. Departures occur every 15 minutes. It is important to note that there is no car park available at the beginning of the walk. Visitors are advised to park at the visitor information centre and pay for a 5km bus trip, which will drop them off at the edge of the forest.

There are two trail options available for exploring the Daintree. The first is a .6km walk, ideal for visitors who wish to prioritize swimming in the beautiful natural pools. The second option is a 3km loop, which allows for a more extensive exploration of the rainforest for those who enjoy walking and discovering the various wonders it holds.

The 0.6km walk leads you from the shuttle bus drop-off point to a suspension bridge and takes you over raised boardwalks, offering scenic views. Along the way, you'll also come across swimming lagoons and small waterfalls.

The 3km loop encompasses all the mentioned attractions and offers additional opportunities to explore the forest. It is not considered difficult or demanding; however, it's important to note that the walking tracks are unpaved, there may be some ants if you deviate from the path for a photo, and walking in the rain may not be enjoyable.

My top tips for visiting Mossman Gorge:

  • If the weather is warm, don't forget to bring your swimsuit to go swimming. The water in this area is known for being one of the purest sources in Australia.
  • It is important to remember to bring plenty of mosquito repellent to protect yourself from mosquito bites.
  • If you are planning to embark on the 3km walk, it is advisable to wear closed-toe shoes in order to prevent ant bites. I made the mistake of wearing flip-flops, which left me vulnerable to ant bites.
  • Visitors have the option to bring their own snacks to enjoy while taking a break near the lagoons or at the open space undercover tables and chairs in the visitor's centre. Although there is some food available, it is limited to coffee, tea, hot chocolates, and simple meals.
  • To freshen up for the remainder of your road trip, it's a good idea to take a quick shower after your hike or swim..

The Daintree and Cape Tribulation regions, located in far north Queensland, are both recognized as World Heritage sites. These wet tropic areas have withstood climate changes for over 130 million years, making them highly significant on a global scale.
